Ghana’s Ministry of Energy and Green Transition and Tullow Ghana have collaborated to facilitate the supply of Ghanaian crude oil to a domestic refinery for local processing.
The move supports Ghana’s efforts to strengthen local refining capacity, enhance energy security and advance industrial development.
A statement issued by Tullow and copied to The Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday said, under the commercial arrangement, crude oil from the Jubilee Field, operated by Tullow on behalf of the Jubilee Partners, had been made available to Sentuo Oil Refinery for processing into refined petroleum products for the Ghanaian market.
It said the deal was made possible through Tullow’s longstanding commercial relationship with global commodities company Glencore, the exclusive marketer of Tullow’s crude oil entitlement. Working closely with the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition and Sentuo, crude oil liftings were made available, through the Suezmax Mare Siculum vessel, to Sentuo’s terminal to support operations, strengthen refining capacity and enhance security of supply. The statement said the initiative came at a time when global crude supply chains continue to face pressures from geopolitical uncertainty and market volatility.“This arrangement offers a potentially cost-effective alternative to imports while strengthening the resilience of the country’s energy sector. Moreover, the transportation of crude from Ghana’s offshore fields to Tema for local refining presents a commercially attractive option compared to sourcing crude feedstock from overseas markets,” statement said.
Commenting on the deal, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor said:
“This achievement demonstrates the power of collaboration and what can be accomplished when government and industry work together in pursuit of a common national objective.
Beyond the immediate commercial benefits, this initiative has significant strategic implications for Ghana. A stronger domestic refining industry enhances fuel supply reliability, reduces exposure to international supply shocks, improves foreign exchange retention and creates employment opportunities across the petroleum value chain.”
Tullow Managing Director, Jean-Medard Madama said:
“This initiative reflects our commitment to supporting the development of Ghana’s energy sector beyond upstream production. Facilitating access to locally produced crude for domestic refining helps strengthen the links across the petroleum value chain while contributing to energy security, industrial growth and long-term value creation for the country.”As operator of the Jubilee Field on behalf of the Jubilee Partners, Tullow continues to play a significant role in Ghana’s energy sector. Together with its partners, the company has invested substantially in the country through ongoing drilling programmes, production optimisation activities, local content development, community investments and strategic partnerships designed to deliver sustainable long-term value for Ghana.
